These are busy days here in Jefferson City.
Last week, the Senate Transportation Committee moved our Second Amendment Preservation Act out of the Committee on a party line vote.
Today, they heard testimony on another MOFC bill, designed to fix the problem with existing pre-emption law.
Senate Bill 74, sponsored by Senator Brad Hudson, would add civil penalties to Missouri’s Pre-emption law. These are badly needed.
(I was proud to testify in support of SB-74 on behalf of MOFC members.)
As you remember, late last year, Jackson County enacted a county ordinance that made it a “crime” for anyone to possess a handgun or ammo, under 21 years of age.
In addition, the order also made it a crime to possess a semi-automatic rifle for anyone under 21 years of age.
This is in direct violation of existing Missouri law that states only the General Assembly has the authority to regulate the sale, possession, and use of firearms and ammunition here in Missouri.
This ordinance was so bad it was vetoed by the County Executive, Frank White.
But that did not matter. The County legislature near Kansas City enacted this ordinance anyway, because there are little, if any in way the of penalties.
SB-74 would fix all of that, allowing individual gun owners to sue the county in civil court for damages!
But only if the bill moves forward. That’s why I hope you’ll sign your petition to your state Senator today, and urge them to move Senate Bill 74 as soon as possible.
The committee could move this bill as early as next week. I’ll be sure to keep you informed.
